psyche, symbol, and the transformation of trauma

Trauma science advanced, but psyche got sidelined. Our knowledge of the biological processes resulting from traumatic experiences has grown, however, our appreciation for the role of the psyche has diminished. This often leaves therapists unequipped to access areas of traumatic experience and recovery that are less material, yet still of vital importance. This presentation proposes the need to reclaim and reintegrate the psyche in trauma work and investigates how this supports the potential of the symbolic to emerge as a conduit for cohesion, meaning, and transformation.

Ryan has an exceptional ability to connect symbolic understanding with the lived experience of trauma. His work invites deep reflection while remaining practical and accessible, something that’s rare and valuable. He brings a compassionate, open and reflective learning space to his presentations, helping people feel engaged, understood, and supported.

dreams and the inward gaze

This presentation explores the psychological significance of dreams and their potential to help deepen and enhance the therapeutic process. Attendees will learn about various theories of dream interpretation and examine practical techniques for incorporating dream exploration into their practice with clients. The session will also highlight case studies demonstrating how dreamwork can support client insight, personal growth, and emotional healing.

Ryan’s dream workshop included both in depth information along with experiential tools to apply empowering methodologies to working with clients and their dreams. I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop and would recommend to all therapists.

pan and the m/other

the international association of jungian studies 2024 conference

At the 2024 IAJS conference, Ryan presented a paper investigating the theme of duality through the archetypes of the “Mother” and the “Other” within Pan’s mythology. Employing a psychodynamic lens, combined with Jung’s complex theory, deeply embedded self-regulatory patterns present in constellated experiences of anxiety and desire become evident. Pan, a god whose very physiology contains a dichotomy between animal nature and human nature, helps us to understand our own fragmentation and reactivity in the face of existential threats. Furthermore, Pan offers guidance in integrating a different consciousness that moves us toward a more ensouled relatedness to our own instincts, each other, and the earth.
